Quote of the Day: Basho

James Gardens - Toronto

James Gardens – Toronto

“Furu ike ye
Kawazu tobikomu
Mizu no oto”

“Ah! The old pond
A frog jumps in
The water’s sound”
– Basho

Haiku – the popular Japanese style of poetry that uses three lines of 5 syllables, 7 syllables, and 5 syllables respectively – is a simple yet profound way to express the experience of a moment and was a popular art among Zen masters.

While the English translation of this poem retains most of its beauty, I wanted to include the original Japanese wording because even if you don’t understand the words, just reading them aloud allows you to experience the beauty of how the sound of the poem was meant to flow in its original language.
